The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and Subject Tests

     The GRE should be taken by candidates who are applying for a graduate program other than the MBA. This means that students applying for a graduate program ~ Engineering, Computer Science, Sociology, Geography, English Literature etc. must all take the GRE. The GRE General Test contains sections to measure verbal, quantitative, and analytical skills.

     There are plans to introduce changes in the General GRE from 1999. Two new components-Mathematical Reasoning Test and a Writing Test will be added to the current verbal, quantitative and analytical measures. The new Mathematical Reasoning Test will measure a test taker's ability to reason using the principles learned in first-year calculus and other basic college mathematics courses. The new Writing Test will measure a test taker's general writing ability, specifically the ability to effectively present and sustain a coherent discussion of views about a complex issue, and possibly the ability to critique an argument.

  GRE Subject Tests

      In addition to the GRE General Test, graduate departments at sum universities want applicants to take the GRE Subject Test. The GRE Subject Tests are designed to test the knowledge a student learned about various subjects as an undergraduate student.
