  Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT-I)

Most universities require international students to take an academic entrance test, the SAT-I: Reasoning Test. Universities that have many applicants offer admission to the best students who apply. They use the SAT -I scores to help them decide which students have the best academic abilities. When a student takes the SAT -I, he or she gets two scores, a verbal score and a mathematical score. For each section, the scores are reported on a scale from 200 (low) to 800 (high)- the maximum score being 1600. Universities base admissions decision on a combination of the verbal and mathematical scores (apart from other factors). The aim of the testing programme is to assist college admission officials in comparing applicants from different educational backgrounds and to predict their academic performance in the first term of college. Good universities usually want applicants to have a total score of 1200 or above for admission and 1400 or above for financial aid.

If a student takes the SAT -I more than once, many colleges will"use" only the best two scores (verbal and math), even if they come from different testing dates. Some will use the highest total score from a single testing date. Further, some schools use only the latest score, even if the previous ones are better.
