What is GRE?

GRE or Graduation Record Examination is a comprehensive test for students who aspire to move to the United States or Canada. This examination aims at testing the candidate’s skills pertaining to critical thinking, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing.
The examination is conducted in an online format at several centres across the country. GRE is essentially divided into two types, namely GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test, designed for different purposes. While the General Test aims at a holistic curriculum (critical thinking, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing), the Subject Test is about a specific subject that a student is seeking to pursue. The exam that the student has to take in GRE often varies across universities and their requirements to assess the skills of the applicant.
The duration of the exam is 3 hours and 45 minutes wherein one has to attend 6 detailed sections, distinguished to test different attributes in the candidate. The candidates are entitled to a 10-minute break after the third section during this test.

This Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) follows these sections

*Any section in which you answer no questions at all will be reported as a No Score (NS)

The GRE is a modified Computer Adaptive Test (CAT). Rather than being required to answer each question before going on to the next, as would occur in a CAT, students taking this modified CAT may, in each of the 4 maths and verbal sections, move around within a given section. They may answer some questions immediately, mark others for review, and skip some questions entirely. Students have this freedom within each of the four sections, but once the allotted time is up and that section has been submitted, they will not be able to return to it. The submitted section will be immediately scored by the computer, an initial score will be calculated, and when the next section of that type (math or verbal) is presented, its difficulty level will be higher or lower, based on how well the student performed on the submitted section.
